FORT NELSON, BC, Nov. 9, 2013 /CNW/ - Bob Zimmer, Member of Parliament for Prince George—Peace River, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, today announced $297,952 in funding for two safety improvement projects at the Northern Rockies Regional Airport.
The Northern Rockies Regional Airport is receiving through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) $258,500 for the replacement of a runway sweeper and $39,452 for a runway condition reporting system. The new runway sweeper will ensure the effective removal of snow, slush and ice from runways and taxiways and the runway condition reporting system will provide timely, accurate and precise wireless reporting and recording of runway conditions.
"The Northern Rockies Regional Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said MP Zimmer. "This funding will enhance the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses in this region that rely on it."
"We are very excited to have this new sweeper to further enhance our runway maintenance at the airport," said Bill Streeper, Mayor of the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality. "This type of equipment is essential to ensure that our airport is prepared for the significant growth and development expected in our region."
To date, through ACAP, the Northern Rockies Regional Airport has received more than $4.4 million for 10 projects, including today's announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $608 million for 758 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than one million net new jobs created since July 2009.
