KAMLOOPS, BC, May 30, 2013 /CNW/ - Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament for Kamloops—Thompson—Cariboo, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced funding for an important safety improvement project at the Kamloops Airport.
The Kamloops Airport is receiving $21,442 through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) to purchase an electronic runway condition reporting system. This new system will provide timely, accurate and precise wireless reporting and recording of runway conditions.
"The Kamloops Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said MP McLeod. "This funding will enhance the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses in the Interior of British Columbia."
"The City of Kamloops and the Kamloops Airport Authority are pleased with the assistance from Transport Canada through ACAP, which will allow for a new electronic runway condition reporting system," said Mayor Peter Milobar. "This system will support our airport's improved operations and ensure greater service, as well as our commitment to safety."
To date, through ACAP, the Kamloops Airport has received more than $3.6 million for 10 projects, including today's announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $606 million for 749 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 910,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
