TERRACE, BC, May 30, 2013 /CNW/ - Richard M. Harris, Member of Parliament for Cariboo—Prince George, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced funding for an important safety improvement project at the Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat.
The Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat is receiving $26,313 through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), to purchase an electronic runway condition reporting system. This new system will provide timely, accurate and precise wireless reporting and recording of runway conditions.
"The Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said MP Harris. "This funding will enhance the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses in Northern British Columbia."
"The Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat appreciates the support of the federal government through the Airports Capital Assistance Program with new technology to maintain our high level of airport reliability," said Ron Burnett, President of the Terrace-Kitimat Airport Society. "Our airport continues to provide Northwest British Columbia with the most reliable access to the region's economic growth."
To date, through ACAP, the Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat has received more than $7.5 million for 14 projects, including today's announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $606 million for 749 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 910,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
