WINDSOR, ON, April 10, 2013 /CNW/ - Jeff Watson, Member of Parliament for Essex, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced $827,738 in funding for three safety improvement projects at the Windsor International Airport.
The Windsor International Airport is receiving funding through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) for the purchase of an airport rescue and firefighting truck, as well as the replacement of electronic runway condition reporting equipment and a snow plow blade. The new state-of-the-art firefighting truck will greatly enhance emergency response capability at the airport, while the other equipment will provide for continued clear and safe runways and taxiways for travellers.
"The Windsor International Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said MP Watson. "This funding will enhance the safety for all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses in Southern Ontario that rely on it."
"We are grateful to the federal government and Transport Canada for their continued support of the Airports Capital Assistance Program and Windsor International Airport," said Eddie Francis, Mayor of Windsor. "These funds are essential to supporting our operations and ensure greater and safe service."
To date, through ACAP, the Windsor International Airport has received more than $5.7 million for 11 projects, including today's announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $603 million for 743 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
"Our government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security," concluded MP Watson.
Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 950,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
