VANCOUVER, Jan. 28, 2019 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada continues to make significant investments toward reducing reliance on diesel in Canada's rural and remote communities and remote industrial sites.
Paul Lefebvre, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today announced a combined $4.2-million investment for two TUGLIQ Energy Corporation projects in Nunavut and Quebec.
An investment of $283,000 will enable TUGLIQ to complete a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study to integrate compressed air energy storage with its operations, enabling increased use of wind energy at a Nunavut mine. This project will demonstrate that such a system can achieve significant reductions in diesel consumption.
A second investment of $3.9 million in RAGLAN 2.0 will expand Nunavik's first renewable energy production and storage centre for 16 regional mining operations and Inuit communities in this Arctic region, as well as other mining operations abroad.
Both projects are being funded through Natural Resources Canada's Energy Innovation Program, which received $49 million over three years to support clean energy innovation, and will ensure that clean energy technologies are widely affordable — helping drive economic growth, create jobs and help with the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Through Canada's national energy dialogue, Generation Energy, Canadians expressed that Canada has an opportunity to be a leader in the transition to a clean growth economy. We will continue to support innovative and clean initiatives that create jobs for the middle class, support Canadian industry competitiveness, clean our air and act on climate change.
Quick Facts:
- Reducing reliance on diesel fuel in Canada's rural and remote communities offers environmental benefits and economic opportunities. It is an important priority shared by federal, provincial and territorial governments.
Quotes
"Today's investments will help reduce reliance on diesel fuel and transform the energy landscape in Canada's Arctic region. Our government is proud to support projects that will improve the region's long-term economic stability and energy security, while reducing pollution and the environmental footprint of Canada's northern mining operations and communities."
Paul Lefebvre
Parliamentary Secretary to Canada's Minister of Natural Resources
"TUGLIQ Energy is pleased to partner with its mining customers and NRCan to disengage the North from fossil fuels by deploying innovative projects that continue to avoid the use of millions of litres of diesel each year in the most vulnerable ecosystems. NRCan's support makes possible a major industrial trial of advanced alternative technologies that will eventually find their way into neighbouring communities. We are proud that our projects have been selected, and we thank NRCan for its support in facilitating energy transition projects that are critical to a region and an economic sector of importance to Canada."
