TORONTO, May 24, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, today participated in a round table discussion with union leaders to discuss workplace mental health issues.
"Mental illness has a high cost in human, social and economic terms and studies show that in any given year, one in every five Canadians will suffer from a mental illness. Finding ways to prevent and address workplace illnesses is an integral part of keeping our economy competitive and our labour force strong and healthy," said Minister Raitt.
This round table aimed to discuss stakeholder views regarding the continuing challenges of providing psychologically healthy work places for Canadians across the country. The round table also served as a forum in which participants brainstormed and shared experiences, implementation strategies and best practices through meaningful discussion.
The Government of Canada is committed to promoting fair, safe and healthy workplaces across Canada and engages stakeholders to look at ways to reduce psychological risk and promote a mentally healthier workplace.
Mental health issues are the leading cause of short and long term disabilities in the workplace. It is a shared responsibility to prevent and address mental illnesses in the workplace in order to build a strong Canada.
