GATINEAU, QC, July 17, 2017 /CNW/ - Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) is committed to preserving its heritage assets. In doing so, PSPC is protecting the health and safety of occupants and visitors, greening its buildings and creating jobs and economic growth.
The department is moving forward with the rehabilitation of the iconic Supreme Court of Canada Building, a heritage asset built from 1938 to 1940. The building, which houses the Supreme Court of Canada, its judges and staff, as well as two courtrooms and chambers for the Federal Court of Appeal and the Federal Court, requires significant and extensive rehabilitation work. This work is expected to begin in 2023 and be completed in 2028.
The Supreme Court of Canada Building will be vacated while it is restored, and occupants will use the West Memorial Building during the rehabilitation work. The West Memorial Building has been vacant since 2008 and will be undergoing renovations from 2019 to 2023 to prepare it for use.
The rehabilitation of both the Supreme Court of Canada Building and the West Memorial Building will provide significant benefits to local and national economies, through contract opportunities. The projects will create jobs in the construction industry and related sectors, such as construction materials, manufacturing and professional services.
A Request for Proposal to select a planning and design firm will be launched in summer 2017. A tender has already been launched for preliminary work for the West Memorial Building.
