OTTAWA, Dec. 4, 2019 /CNW/ - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, will deliver the Speech from the Throne to formally open the first session of the 43rd Parliament of Canada. The event will take place on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at 2:40 p.m., at the Senate of Canada Building.
The Speech from the Throne will be broadcast live on television and online at senparlvu.parl.gc.ca/Harmony. One of the governor general's most important constitutional duties is to ensure that Canada always has a prime minister and a government in place that has the confidence of Parliament. As The Queen's representative in Canada, the governor general summons, prorogues and dissolves Parliament, delivers the Speech from the Throne, and gives Royal Assent to acts of Parliament.
