OTTAWA, July 7, 2017 /CNW/ - At the request of the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will undertake an official visit to the People's Republic of China from July 10 to 14, 2017.
During this visit, His Excellency will be accompanied by the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons; the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities; parliamentarians and prominent Canadians who are leaders in education, research, tourism and culture. Through people-to-people ties, they will work with their Chinese counterparts to further enhance Canada-China collaboration.
This will be His Excellency's second time in China as governor general. In 2013, the Governor General and Mrs. Johnston undertook a State visit to China where they visited Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Chengdu and Guangzhou.

Science, Technology and Innovation Round-table Discussion at Chongqing University
The Governor General and members of the Canadian delegation will participate in a round-table discussion with presidents of Chinese universities that facilitate Canada-China research collaborations in science, technology and innovation. Researchers from both Chinese and Canadian universities will also be present to share their expertise and to discuss potential commercialization opportunities arising from these Canada-China collaborations.
Chongqing University is a national university located in Chongqing, in southwest China. Founded in 1929, the university now consists of six faculties: science, social sciences, humanities, engineering, built environment, information science and technology.

Visit to China Express Airlines Training Center and Canadian Flight Simulator Demonstration
The Governor General will visit the China Express Airlines Training Center where he will have an opportunity to test a Canadian flight simulator. China Express Airlines is a fast-growing, Chongqing-based regional carrier that flies predominantly Bombardier planes. The recently purchased simulator is from the Montréal-based company TRU Simulation + Training. The visit will highlight collaboration between Canada and China in the areas of technology and innovation. As part of the visit, His Excellency will witness the signing of a commercial agreement between TRU Simulation + Training Inc. and China Express Airlines. Visit to Raffles City Chongqing and Tour of Urban Planning Museum
The Governor General and members of the Canadian delegation will visit Raffles City Chongqing, a large-scale development project designed by Canadian architect Moshe Safdie and located at the city's Chaotianmen docks. The delegation will also stop at the Urban Planning Museum, where they will be able to view a model of the completed project. This visit will highlight Canada's presence in Chongqing's architectural sector.
Raffles City Chongqing is a development that will change the cityscape of Chongqing with its ambitious design and scale. The design was inspired by the historic images of great Chinese sailing vessels on the river and will pay tribute to Chongqing's history as a trading centre. Hotpot Dinner with Students
His Excellency will participate in a hotpot dinner with Chinese students who are preparing to study at Canadian universities in the fall. The Governor General will deliver brief remarks before joining the students for dinner. This traditional Chongqing dinner will also feature some Canadian-sourced ingredients such as beef and seafood. Hotpot cuisine remains the pride of local Chongqing people. Several local hotpot restaurants, including the venue for this event, have opened branches in Canada.

To highlight collaboration in e-commerce and innovation between Canada and China,
His Excellency will participate in a round-table discussion with local e-commerce
start-ups, to set the stage for future collaboration between Canada and Chongqing in the e-commerce industry.
China has one of the most mature and dynamic e-commerce markets in the world. Chongqing was one of the first national e-commerce trial cities in China, building up a cluster of e-commerce businesses quickly.

Panel Discussion and Film Screening
The Governor General will offer opening remarks at a cultural event entitled Celebrating Our Diversity and Preserving Our Heritage. Afterwards, a group of panellists, including Canadian delegate Manon Barbeau, Founder, Director General and Artistic Director of Wapikoni Mobile, will discuss themes of relevance to Chinese ethnic minorities and Canadian Indigenous cultures. Specifically they will explore ways to preserve culture, develop community and better understand the challenges and opportunities presented by globalization, modernization and urbanization.
A screening of two documentaries will follow the panel discussion, featuring works by Canadian Indigenous artists and ethnic minorities from southwest China.
The event is being held in the newly built Confucius Theater, a major cultural site in Guiyang devoted to preserving Chinese traditions.

Visit to Tsinghua University
His Excellency and members of the delegation will meet with members of Tsinghua University's leadership to strengthen Canada-China co-operation in the areas of education and research. Afterwards, the Governor General and the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, will visit a water purification research lab jointly operated by Canadian company Trojan Technologies and Tsinghua University's School of Environment Engineering and Science. The lab's research focuses on disinfection technology and its applications.

His Excellency will play a game of scrimmage with local minor hockey players. Afterwards, the Governor General will witness the signing of agreements that will highlight Canada's potential to help grow hockey in China.

The Governor General will attend an event hosted by JD.com to support an online promotion featuring tourism as well as Canadian food and consumer products available on their website.
His Excellency and Mr. Richard Liu, Chairman and CEO of JD.com, will tour the exhibition hall and then deliver brief remarks and jointly launch the Canadian Fresh Food Pavilion on JD.com. The Canadian products being showcased will include blueberries, oysters, salmon, cod, snow crab, scallops, lobster, shrimp, surf clam, geoduck, sole, capelin, beef, pork and wine. During this visit, the Governor General will witness the signing of a cooperation agreement between Destination Canada and JD.com.
