SHERBROOKE, QC, April 3, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Businessman Normand Legault will be presiding the sixth major fundraising campaign of the Université de Sherbrooke under the theme Promising futures, shared passions. His enthusiasm and his involvement in the campaign are sure to garner many donor contributions in support of the university's mission of education, research and community service.
According to Legault, who was granted the title of UdeS Great Ambassador in 2006, "The Université de Sherbrooke has played a key role in my life. It's where I acquired the knowledge that has allowed me to achieve my career goals and to pursue my passion for business. I am extremely pleased to have this opportunity to give back to the university by promoting its mission, its growth and its development."
The campaign Promising futures, shared passions, which comes at the dawn of the 60th anniversary of the UdeS, is a reflection of the institution's hallmark of innovation. "Normand Legault is one of our most illustrious graduates and his accomplishments are well known to the public," said Professor Luce Samoisette, Rector of the university. "We are honoured and we are grateful to him for having agreed to lead our campaign with his typical enthusiasm, as well as for working with us to raise awareness of the university's excellence and the importance of higher education."
Internal campaign an unprecedented success
The internal portion of the Université de Sherbrooke fundraising campaign is currently under way. Thanks to unprecedented support from employees, retirees and students, the established objective of $10 million will soon be surpassed. The campaign has been bolstered by more than 50 projects across the 9 faculties. This success will undoubtedly serve as leverage for fundraising efforts addressed to major donors under the broader campaign.
Success and commitment
Just three years after completing his bachelor's degree in administration at UdeS (1978), Normand Legault, at the age of 25, became Chief Executive Officer of the Grand Prix of Canada. Under his direction, this series of the Formula 1 World Championship generated spectacular economic spinoffs. Since retiring from Formula 1 management in 2008, Legault has put his expertise to work for society by serving on a number of boards of administration, in addition to becoming involved in social and philanthropic causes. In 2013, his passion for sports led him to act as Governor in the organization of the Canada Summer Games held in Sherbrooke. Legault is currently President and CEO of the motor sports company GPF1.
