CAMROSE, AB, April 3, 2012 /CNW/ - Travel Alberta and Big Valley Jamboree are pleased to announce that Legal is the grand-prize winner of the Small Town Saturday Night contest. A great success, the Small Town Saturday Night contest received 53 entries and more than 100 thousand public votes from around Alberta.
"It's been inspiring to see the community spirit generated across Alberta through this contest. We've been overwhelmed by the support shown for these great towns," said Jack Hayden, Minister of Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation. "Legal will put on an excellent show when we celebrate Small Town Saturday Night."
Legal is a small community of just over 1,000, located 50 kms north of Edmonton. Their entry for Small Town Saturday Night features all the people that make their community special. Legal is known as a destination for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fishing and hiking in the summer.
"There are an incredible number of people out there who might not have heard of Legal before, but now know what a proud, vibrant and dynamic community we are," says Trina Jones, Town Councillor for the Town of Legal and Small Town Saturday Night Committee member. "We can't wait to host Small Town Saturday Night!"
As the grand-prize winner, Legal will host their own mini-Big Valley Jamboree on April 28th, 2012 featuring country stars Dean Brody, Aaron Lines, Samantha King, Duane Steele, Shane Chisholm and Tim Hus. All funds raised from the concert will go toward The Friends of Legal School Society to build the children of Legal an exciting new playground.
"Every Albertan is a beneficiary of Alberta's tourism economy," says Bruce Okabe, Chief Executive Officer of Travel Alberta. "This contest has shone a spotlight on Alberta's small communities and is sure to drive tourism to some lesser-known destinations around the province."
In addition to awarding the grand-prize, Travel Alberta is awarding the four runners up, Bonnyville, Bashaw, Devon and High River with a one thousand dollar cheque to be donated toward the local charity identified in their original submission.
"Legal's creativity and competitive spirit has garnered them the overall title of winner of the Small Town Saturday Night competition," explains Larry Werner, Producer, Panhandle Productions. "We had a great cross-section of Alberta communities represented and I would like to thank each and every one for participating; your involvement turned this into a fantastic event!"
Travel Alberta and Panhandle Productions would like to extend a special congratulations to Legal for their excellent Small Town Saturday Night submission.
