GTA students hold funeral for affordable post-secondary education
TORONTO, Oct. 30, 2013 /CNW/ - College and university students in the Greater Toronto Area are mourning the death of affordable, accessible post-secondary education in Ontario. A funeral procession and eulogy delivery will take place today to pay respects.
"This Halloween, students across the province are mourning the passing of a post-secondary education system that was once affordable and accessible," said Alastair Woods, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario. "Tuition fees are out of reach for the average student in Ontario where we pay the highest fees in all of Canada."
Students will be giving eulogies speaking to what an affordable, accessible post-secondary education system means to them and their constituents. There will be students commenting on access issues for graduate and college students, as well as for marginalized communities.
"Graduate students have known post-secondary education for a long time and are saying goodbye to its affordability and accessibility at today's funeral," said Anna Goldfinch, National Executive Representative for the Canadian Federation of Students- Ontario.
The Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario represents more than 300,000 college, undergraduate and graduate students in all regions of the province, including students at George Brown College, OCAD, Ryerson University, York University and the St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough campuses of the University of Toronto.
