Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area makes the dream of homeownership a reality for six low-income families in Toronto
TORONTO, May 28, 2014 /CNW/ - Habitat for Humanity will make the dream of homeownership a reality for six low-income families as volunteers, corporate sponsors, and community partners, come together on May 28 at 4:00 p.m. to dedicate the completion of six semi-detached homes on Acme Crescent (42 Acme Crescent, near Kipling & Dixon) - the last development under the Habitat for Humanity Toronto name and the first dedication as Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area (Habitat GTA).
"There is no better way to honour the legacy of Habitat Toronto than to share in this special moment with these six hardworking families," says Ene Underwood, CEO for Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area. "Affordable housing is vital to fostering the social, health and economic well-being of families in the GTA and we are building on the foundation of making our communities better places to live, work, and grow."
As a newly amalgamated affiliate, Habitat GTA will continue to develop affordable housing solutions to serve even more families in the Greater Toronto Area. As the first dedication for Habitat GTA, the organization recognizes that these accomplishments would not be possible without the support of volunteer and community partners such as Legacy Sponsor, Manulife Financial, who has continued their commitment by being the first sponsor to support our new larger organization.
To Tricia Wedderburn, a single mother of four children, the opportunity of owning a home has been dream come true. Tricia moved from Jamaica to Canada in 1994, and has since started a family in Toronto. Presently, the Wedderburn's are residing in a low-income housing unit located in an unsafe neighbourhood. The living conditions are very unhealthy, with mold growing around the windows, on the ceilings, and in the basement. Tricia desperately wants her children to grow up in a better environment that motivates them to focus on their education, interests, and dreams. As a part of her 500 "sweat equity" hours, Tricia worked on her own home, in addition to working at the ReStore. Tricia describes home as " home is a place where you can go to at any time to rest, cry, just feel the love, and always feel happy because we are together with family and friends." The Wedderburn family is looking forward to meeting their neighbours and settling into their new home.
The dedication will be followed by the legacy event ceremony and BBQ.

Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area (Habitat GTA) is a non-profit housing organization that mobilizes volunteers and community partners in providing affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.
