Habitat for Humanity GTA cuts ribbon on new 13-home project in Brampton during Women Build
BRAMPTON, ON, May 4, 2018 /CNW/ - Habitat for Humanity GTA kicked off Women Build with the announcement of their new 13-home project at 59 McLaughlin Road North in Brampton on May 3rd. The organization was joined on-site by the Mayor of Brampton Linda Jeffrey, future Habitat homeowners that will be calling these houses their homes, 2018 Women Build Ambassador and TV personality Sherry Holmes, and 50 Women Build volunteers to cut the ribbon on this project.
"The Region of Peel and the City of Brampton have been tremendous partners in helping us continue to help more working, lower-income families achieve strength, stability, and self-reliance of Habitat homeownership," said Ene Underwood, Habitat for Humanity GTA CEO. "The McLaughlin Road project builds on our momentum in the Region of Peel, and we're excited to mobilize even more volunteers and community partners to help give our families a hand up."
The Bhuttooah's will be one of the thirteen families moving into a new Habitat home on McLaughlin Road in 2018-19. The family of four currently lives in the basement of a townhouse where they share a single converted bedroom. "My wife and I have been sleeping on a mattress on the floor, which we need to tuck away in order to make space for our young children to move around and play," said Amreet Bhuttooah, the family's father. "We've had issues of cockroach infestations and the basement is poorly ventilated and at times we smell drainage from upstairs. We were absolutely thrilled to receive the news this year that we will be moving into a Habitat home at the McLaughlin Road site."
The 9th annual Women Build marks the first time volunteers will be helping build at the McLaughlin Road site. Over the course of the seven-day event in May, hundreds of women will work together framing and laying the foundation for these homes alongside the future Habitat homeowner families. Since 2009, Habitat for Humanity GTA's Women Build has rallied over 5,000 local women to raise more than $4 million, and help build 85 homes. This year's event goal is to raise $275,000 in support of the organization's homebuilding projects across the GTA.
"The power, energy, and feeling of sisterhood we create in building these homes is truly inspiring," said Sherry Holmes, 2018 Women Build Ambassador. "If being here helps inspire or encourage women to try a construction-related trade and possibly pursue it as a career, not to mention get more involved with volunteering in their community or around the world, then I've done my job."
