Habitat GTA's Pride Build brings together the LGBTA community to celebrate diversity and build brighter futures for low-income families
Over 100 people celebrating Pride are set to raise $70,000 and help build 15 Habitat homes
TORONTO, June 1, 2017 /CNW/ - Habitat for Humanity GTA (Habitat GTA) and Presenting Sponsor TD Bank Group, invite members, friends and supporters of the LGBTA community to come together in celebration of our city's diversity on June 8th and 9th at the 4th annual Pride Build. The event takes place at Habitat GTA's Pinery Trail build site (140 Pinery Trail, Toronto), the charity's largest build project to date, where more than 100 participating volunteers will help build 15 stacked townhouses. Each Pride Build participant is committed to fundraise a minimum of $250 toward achieving this year's goal of $70,000. Money raised through this event will fund all the roofs and windows for one block of the 50-home project on Pinery Trail. To register for Pride Build visit www.pridebuild.ca
With 1 in 5 households living in over-crowded, substandard or unaffordable housing in the GTA, Pride Build is about more than just building homes for families living in need of decent housing. It is a platform for people in the GTA to raise their collective voice, and rally together to shed light on the importance of building strong, healthy communities, and inclusive environments, which starts with having a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.
The GTA has long been home to some of the world's most renowned Pride celebrations and traditions, bringing together people of diverse backgrounds and sexual orientation to celebrate courage, diversity, community and the defense of human rights. Pride Builds or "Rainbow Builds" have grown in popularity over the past few years as celebrated annual events hosted by several U.S. Habitat for Humanity affiliates. Habitat GTA introduced Canada's first Pride Build in 2014.
"Pride Toronto has a long history of combining both fun and inclusiveness and Pride Build does just that," said Ene Underwood, CEO, Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area. "Pride Build offers a fun way for members, friends and supporters of the LGBTA community to come together, learn some new skills, while giving a hand up to families in need of safe, decent, affordable housing in the GTA."
Habitat GTA's 2017 Pride Build is generously supported by Presenting Sponsor, TD Bank Group, and Day Sponsor, Genworth. For more information on Pride Build visit www.pridebuild.ca or join the conversation using the hashtag #PrideBuild on social media.
