VANCOUVER, June 28, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today announced Government of Canada support for a project to create more leadership opportunities for girls and young women in Vancouver.
"Our government recognizes the enormous potential of girls and young women to take on leadership roles in our communities," said Minister Ambrose. "This promising new project with the Justice Education Society of British Columbia will help us ensure that Canadian girls and young women have what it takes to become leaders and decision makers."
The Justice Education Society of British Columbia is receiving $200,000 from the Harper Government for a 24-month project to help girls and young women aged 15 to 25 in seven Metro Vancouver communities to develop new leadership skills. Participants will engage with local decision-makers and lead activities to address barriers to their participation in civic and political life.
"We are pleased to partner with the Government of Canada to create civic leadership opportunities for girls and young women," said Mr. Rick Craig, Executive Director of the Justice Education Society of British Columbia. "By working together to remove barriers to opportunity, we are helping girls and young women to take on leadership roles in their communities."
This project is being supported under Status of Women Canada's Call for Proposals, Setting the Stage for Girls and Young Women to Succeed. The Government of Canada has approved more than $5.9 million in funding under this call for projects that promote leadership and prosperity among girls and young women.
The Harper Government is committed to supporting projects that yield concrete results for women and girls while strengthening families, communities and the country. The government's support through Status of Women Canada for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2007, supporting over 600 projects.
