Harper Government honours Veterans at 11th Annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon in Oakville Français
OAKVILLE, ON, Nov. 5, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Terence Young, Member of Parliament for Oakville, honoured Canada's Veterans today at the 11th Annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon hosted by MEDIchair Halton in Oakville.
"Veterans' Week is a time when Canadians honour those who have sacrificed to defend Canada's values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law," said Minister Blaney. "They have earned the recognition of all Canadians. We must remember all Canadian Veterans and continue to honour those who serve today."
Kristen Courtney, from MEDIchair Halton, and a team of volunteers, worked tirelessly to make this special day possible. The event included a Colour Party, and greetings from dignitaries followed by a wreath-laying ceremony. Exhibits by the Oakville Museum of Erchless Estate, the Canadian Red Cross, and the Korean War Exhibit were also on display throughout the event. In addition, the Portraits of Honour, a mural featuring the faces of the Canadian Armed Forces personnel who have lost their lives in Afghanistan, was presented by artist Dave Sopha. MP Young laid a wreath and spoke about the importance of remembrance.
"It is heartening to see Canadians more engaged than ever in reaching out to Veterans, men and women in uniform, and their families," said MP Young. "Our Government is committed to commemorating the sacrifices and achievements of the brave Canadians whose legacy is the peace and security we continue to enjoy as Canadians."
Veterans Affairs Canada staff were also on site to inform attendees of the many programs, services and benefits available to Veterans and serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces. If you are a Veteran, or know someone who is, find out more at veterans.gc.ca.
