HALIFAX, July 18, 2012 /CNW/ - New investments in arts and culture in Nova Scotia are helping boost the economy and create jobs and growth. Support for 52 projects throughout the province was announced today by the Honourable Peter Penashue, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
The funding will support a range of projects—from hosting summer festivals to various arts events and acitivities—that provide visitors and residents of Nova Scotia with rich cultural experiences. Organizations receiving funding include the Halifax Pop Explosion Association, the Millbrook Powwow Committee, the Antigonish Highland Society, the Jazz East Rising Association, the Chedabucto Bay Folk Society, the Maison la bouche rouverte associée, the Mi'kmawey Debert Cultural Centre, and Live Art Dance Productions.
"This year marks the start of the five-year countdown to Canada's 150th birthday in 2017," said Minister Moore. "Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, prosperous and free country we are today."

"Many of the projects receiving funding will stimulate tourism in numerous communities across the province and contribute to their cultural vitality. We are proud to partner with these groups, whose hard work makes these projects possible."
"Because of our funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage, we are able to offer over 200 cultural community events during the Celtic Colours International Festival. These volunteer-run events instill a sense of community pride and a feeling of belonging in the small rural communities that make up Cape Breton," said Mary Pat Mombourquette, Business Director. "The increased cultural activity feeds our living Celtic culture, supports our musicians and artisans, and benefits Cape Breton's tourism industry by helping sustain the culture that attracts visitors."
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $1,593,423 through three programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, and the Museums Assistance Program.
