Harper Government Invests in Arts, Culture, and Official Languages in Newfoundland and Labrador Français
PLACENTIA, NL, March 20, 2012 /CNW/ - Local organizations will contribute to the cultural and economic vitality of Newfoundland and Labrador communities, thanks to investments from the Government of Canada. Support for more than 130 projects was announced today by Peter Penashue, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
"A vibrant and diverse culture is key to the quality of life of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Penashue. "Thanks to these investments, arts and community organizations in the province can continue to offer great performances and cultural experiences to residents and visitors."
"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in important local projects like those announced today," said Minister Moore. "By supporting these activities in Newfoundland and Labrador, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy, enhance tourism, and support our culture and Canadian identity."
The funding supports a wide range of organizations and projects across the province, including many local festivals, cultural organizations, and businesses. Groups and initiatives receiving support include the Fédération des francophones de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador, the Newfoundland Aboriginal Women's Network, the North West River Beach Festival, the Torbay 250 Committee, the Mummers Festival, and several community newspapers.
"Placentia 350 Inc. and the entire community is excited to be celebrating the diverse history of Placentia with a full calendar of special events taking place throughout the year," said Wayne Power Jr., Chairperson of Placentia 350 Inc. "Over the past 350 years many nationalities have played a role in the development of our region, including the Portuguese, Spanish, Basque, French, English, Irish and Americans. The generous funding assistance from Canadian Heritage will allow us to celebrate and tell the many stories which have influenced our community."
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $5,836,484 through the following programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Aboriginal Peoples' Program, the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, Canada Book Fund, the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, the Canada Periodical Fund, Exchanges Canada, the Museums Assistance Program, and the Official Languages Support Programs.
