TIMMINS, ON, Aug. 13, 2012 /CNW/ - Investments by the Harper Government in cultural organizations in Northern Ontario are helping create jobs and stimulate the economy. Support for 48 projects was announced today by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
These investments will support a wide variety of organizations that share the goal of boosting tourism and strengthening the local economy while providing Northern Ontarians with unique cultural experiences in their communities. Organizations receiving funding include the Sioux Lookout Creative Arts Circle, the Conseil des arts de Hearst, the Fort Frances Times, the Centre régional de loisirs culturel, and Fort William Historical Park.
"This year marks the start of the five-year countdown to Canada's 150th birthday in 2017," said Minister Moore. "Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, prosperous, and free country we are today."
"Financial support from the Government of Canada and from Canadian Heritage is vital to our organization," said Daniel Ouellet, General Manager of the Centre culturel La Ronde. "This funding allows us to continue to promote the French language in our community and provide programs and services in French to people in the Timmins area."
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $1,623,299 through six programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Canada Periodical Fund, the Development of Official-Language Communities Program, the Museums Assistance Program, and the 1812 Commemoration Fund. For more information about the projects, see the attached backgrounder.
