CHARLOTTETOWN, PE, Feb. 24, 2012 /CNW/ - Arts and culture organizations will help create jobs and growth throughout Prince Edward Island, thanks to investments from the Government of Canada. Support for 31 projects was announced today by the Honourable Ted Menzies, Minister of State (Finance) and Member of Parliament (Macleod), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
The investments support a wide range of projects across the province, including many local festivals and cultural groups. Some of the organizations or projects receiving support today include the Bluegrass Festival of Évangéline, the Festival of Small Halls, Harbourfront Theatre Presents, and the 100th anniversary celebrations for Summerside's historic Armoury Building.
"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in important local initiatives like those announced today in Prince Edward Island," said Minister Moore. "Through this support, our Government is delivering on its commitment to create jobs and growth and support our arts, culture, heritage, Aboriginal peoples, and official languages."
"Investing in these initiatives is central to the economic health of communities," said Minister of State Menzies. "Thanks to this investment, artists and arts organizations in Prince Edward Island can also continue to offer great performances and cultural experiences to Canadians and visitors."
"We are delighted to receive this support from the Government of Canada," said Ray Brow, President of Small Halls Inc., one of the organizations receiving funding. "Once again, we are pleased to have additional resources, provided by the government, which permit us to provide a comprehensive educational, and entertaining program across the entire province of Prince Edward Island."
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $401,617 through the following programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Development of Official-Language Communities Program, the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, the Canada Periodical Fund, the Canada Interactive Fund, the Cultural Development Fund, and the Aboriginal Women's Programming Elements of the Aboriginal Peoples' Program.
