LEASK, SK, June 29, 2012 /CNW/ - The residents of Leask will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of their community as a village, thanks to the efforts of local volunteers and an investment from the Government of Canada. This was announced today by Maurice Vellacott, Member of Parliament (Saskatoon-Wanuskewin), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
The Leask Centennial celebrations take place from June 29 to July 1, 2012, and celebrate the people from the Cree First Nations, Métis, French, Ukrainian, Jewish, Chinese, and other cultures that contributed to the community. Activities include the creation of an outdoor structure for performing artists decorated with artwork depicting the history and traditions of the community.
"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in celebrations like the Leask Centennial Celebrations to ensure that Canada's rich heritage is preserved for future generations," said Minister Moore. "We are proud to invest in these initiatives. By doing so, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy and support our arts, culture, and heritage."
"Celebrations such as this are important milestones and an integral part of Canada's history," said Mr. Vellacott. "These historic celebrations strengthen local pride and contribute to the economic strength of our communities."
"The Leask Centennial Committee would like to thank the Government of Canada for their support," said Maurice Stieb, Chairman of the committee. "This funding has helped volunteers organize a weekend of activities for both the young and old and has allowed a group of very talented and visionary people to create a mural of the main street of Leask's early years."
The village of Leask, located north of Saskatoon, was officially incorporated on September 3, 1912. Today it is home to 418 residents.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $17,270 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
