WINNIPEG, July 17, 2012 /CNW/ - Investments in arts, culture, and official languages are helping boost the economy and create jobs and growth in Manitoba. Support for 23 projects was announced today by Shelly Glover, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament (Saint Boniface), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
The funding supports a wide range of organizations and projects across the province, including local festivals and cultural organizations that all share the common goal of providing residents of Manitoba with rich cultural experiences. Groups and initiatives receiving support include the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, the Festival du Voyageur, the Manitoba Museum, and Canada's National History Society.
"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in Manitoba's economic future," said Minister Moore. "By supporting these important projects, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy, boost tourism, and support our arts, culture, heritage, and official languages."
"We know that investing in arts, culture, and Francophone community organizations is key to the economic health of communities throughout Manitoba," said Mrs. Glover. "These investments support a range of activities that will showcase our province's rich culture and heritage to residents and visitors alike."
"The funding will help Gallery One One One achieve its goal of highlighting the visionary work of University of Manitoba artists," said Dr. David T. Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba. "This support is especially welcomed by our trendsetting artists."
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $2,246,561 through seven programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, the Museums Assistance Program, the Development of Official-Language Communities Program, the Enhancement of Official Languages Program, and the Youth Take Charge program.
