FREDERICTON, Aug. 30, 2012 /CNW/ - New investments in arts, culture, and official languages in New Brunswick are helping boost the economy and create jobs and growth. Support for 44 projects throughout the province was announced today by the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defence, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie), and Member of Parliament (Madawaska-Restigouche), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
Funding will support a range of projects—from hosting summer festivals and promoting official languages to celebrating Canadian authors and fostering youth engagement—all with the common goal of providing residents of New Brunswick with rich cultural experiences. Some of the organizations receiving support include the Multicultural Association of Greater Moncton, Granite Town Festival 2012, the Comité du Festival de Bathurst, the Société nationale de l'Acadie, and Canadian Parents for French New Brunswick.
"This year marks the start of the five-year countdown to Canada's 150th birthday in 2017," said Minister Moore. "Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, prosperous, and free country we are today."
"These investments contribute to the cultural vitality of our communities and to the local economy," said Minister Valcourt. "Many of the projects will stimulate tourism in numerous communities across New Brunswick. We are proud to partner with the various groups who make these initiatives possible."
"The financial support from the Government of Canada is essential to the success of Canadian Parents for French New Brunswick," said Richard Rice, President. "This funding allows us to assure the highest quality French-second-language programs in New Brunswick and also provides the opportunity for our organization to offer out-of-class activities in French to the students. Without this support, the student population of New Brunswick would be at a great loss."
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $1,408,658 through the following programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, the Development of Official-Language Communities Program, the Enhancement of Official Languages Program, the Canada Book Fund, the Aboriginal Languages Initiative of the Aboriginal Peoples' Program, and the Youth Take Charge program.
