CAMPBELL RIVER, BC, April 15, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable John Duncan, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced $1,331,000 in funding for an important safety improvement project at the Campbell River Airport.
The Campbell River Airport is receiving funding through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) for an airfield electrical rehabilitation project. This project will provide for continued airfield visibility and safe runways and taxiways for travellers.
"The Campbell River Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said MP Duncan. "This funding will enhance the safety for all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses on Vancouver Island that rely on it."
"The City of Campbell River has been working with Transport Canada to secure a funding grant to upgrade the airport's lighting system for reduced visibility departures," said Walter Jakeway, Mayor of Campbell River. "These welcome improvements will increase safety and the number of aircraft takeoffs from the YBL runway in foggy weather or other low-visibility situations, which strengthens the role of our Campbell River Airport in our local and regional economy."
To date, through ACAP, the Campbell River Airport has received more than $3.2 million for eight projects, including today's announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $603 million for 743 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
"Our government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security," concluded MP Duncan.
Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 898,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
