MORRISBURG, May 24, 2012 /CNW/ - An investment in St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage Performances will provide Canadians with access to arts and culture, create jobs, and promote economic growth in the region. Support for this performance series was announced today by Guy Lauzon, Member of Parliament (Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
With this funding, St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage Performances will present seven concerts featuring both emerging artists and professional musicians from across Canada. The series will present performances in a variety of genres, including folk, jazz, indie rock and spoken word. Artists will also lead two workshops in musical and creative development. More than 900 residents and visitors are expected to attend the 2012-2013 performances.
"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in local organizations like St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage Performances," said Minister Moore. "By supporting presenters such as this one, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy, boost tourism, and support our arts, culture and heritage."
"I am proud of our Government's commitment to supporting the arts in Canada," said Mr. Lauzon. "By showcasing Canadian musicians, St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage Performances will attract tourists and generate economic growth for the area."
"Funding from the Government of Canada allows Morrisburg's St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage to continue to present top-quality musical performances in a rural setting," said Sandra Whitworth, Vice President of St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage. "We are passionate about introducing our audiences to Canadian and international musicians who would otherwise only be available in more distant urban centres. We also focus on promoting emerging artists and engaging our community through workshops and master classes, all of which is made possible by this commitment from the federal government, for which we are most grateful."
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $8,000 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
