CANMORE, AB, Aug. 22, 2012 /CNW/ - A new investment from the Government of Canada, will preserve the history of Canmore and the Bow Valley and boost tourism in the region. This was announced today by Blake Richards, Member of Parliament (Wild Rose), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
Funding will enable the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre to undertake a collections management project that will preserve and protect 225 historically significant artifacts, including maps, blueprints, and photographs of the Canmore and Bow Valley region. The Centre will purchase and install specialized materials and storage cabinets to house the artifacts, allowing for long-term public access to the collection.
"This year marks the start of the five-year countdown to Canada's 150th birthday in 2017," said Minister Moore. "Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, prosperous, and free country we are today."
"Museums are valued guardians of our heritage. They contribute to the preservation of rich legacies and provide future generations with access to priceless artifacts," said Mr. Richards. "Our Government is proud to support the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre in its efforts to improve collections management and access to our shared history."
"We appreciate the support provided by the Government of Canada to help enhance the museum's current use of space and storage of this material for not only researchers and the public, but for creating displays and exhibitions both internally and externally," said Debbie Carrico, Museum Director, Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre.
The Centennial Museum Society of Canmore, established in 1983, operates the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre. The Centre aims to enrich and inspire residents and visitors through discovery and learning of mountains and heritage. The Centre has both permanent and temporary displays that cover the heritage of Canmore and region, as well as the unique geological history of the Canadian Rockies.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $15,875 through the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
