Harper Government Supporting Leadership Projects for Young Women in British Columbia

VANCOUVER, BC, Dec. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable John Duncan, M.P. for Vancouver Island North, and Minister of State and Chief Government Whip, on behalf of the Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, today announced Government of Canada support for two projects that will help build leadership skills among young women in several communities in British Columbia.

"All Canadians benefit when women and girls of all backgrounds are empowered and equipped to take on leadership roles, said Minister Leitch. "That is why we are supporting these projects − because our Government is committed to supporting the full participation of women in the social, economic, and democratic life of Canada."

"Our Government recognizes and believes in the tremendous leadership potential of girls and young women in our communities," said Minster Duncan. "We are very pleased to support these projects which will empower young women in British Columbia to be leaders."

The International Development Education Association (VIDEA) is receiving $183,126 for a project to help First Nations young women become more involved in community life. Participants will identify and address barriers that prevent women from accessing leadership roles, as well as participate in activities and workshops to build their leadership skills.

"We want cohesive, healthy First Nations communities in British Columbia - communities where everyone can grow and thrive, including young women," said Ms. Lynn Thornton, Executive Director, VIDEA. "Government of Canada support for this project is helping First Nations young women gain skills, confidence and leadership opportunities so they can take an active role in strengthening and leading their communities."

The Salt Spring Women Opposed to Violence and Abuse (SWOVA) Community Development and Research Society is also receiving funds in the amount of $170,922 for a project to empower young women to engage in community and civic life in five semi-rural, isolated communities in the Southern Gulf Islands. As part of a Youth Advisory Council, participants will address barriers preventing their full participation in the community and help to create an ongoing Girls' Leadership Council that will build on project results.                                                                                                               

"In these isolated island communities, young women will either stay or move on to other communities," said Ms. Lynda Laushway, Executive Director, SWOVA Community Development and Research Society. "With Government of Canada support, this project will empower both groups of young women with the skills, knowledge and experience they need for civic engagement, regardless of where they live."

The Harper Government is committed to supporting projects that yield concrete results for women and girls while strengthening families, communities and the country. More than $5.9 million has been approved under a call for proposals for projects that promote leadership and prosperity among girls and young women. Through Status of Women Canada, federal government support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2007, supporting more than 600 projects across the country.
