MONTRÉAL, Sept. 13, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry and Minister of State (Agriculture), and Member of Parliament (Mégantic-L'Érable), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Tennis Canada in support of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Play-Offs 2012.
"Our Government is pleased to support Tennis Canada in the hosting of this exciting event," said Minister Gosal. "The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Play-Offs 2012 will provide an opportunity for all Canadians to show their support for our male tennis stars following their performances at the London 2012 Games."
"Hosting international events such as the Davis Cup not only provides a forum for our athletes to compete against the world's best, but also brings a welcome boost to the local economy," said Minister Paradis. "I congratulate the organizers and volunteers for once again showcasing the City of Montréal to a world audience."
The Davis Cup men's tennis event is the largest annual international team competition in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation and is contested between teams of players from competing countries in a knock-out format.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to Tennis Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program and Sport Canada's Sport Support Program is providing $947,500 to Tennis Canada for the 2012-2013 fiscal year.
