OTTAWA, Dec. 10, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada's 2012-2013 contribution to ParticipACTION. The announcement was made at Viscount Alexander Public School in Ottawa.
"The Harper Government is proud to continue its support for ParticipACTION," said Minister of State Gosal. "We are committed to providing opportunities for Canadians of all ages and all abilities to participate in sport and physical activity, because we know that embracing the power of sport leads to active lifestyles and healthier, stronger communities."
"Thank you to the Government of Canada for its ongoing commitment to ParticipACTION and to physical activity and sport participation in this country," said Kelly Murumets, President and CEO of ParticipACTION. "With this support, we have been able to bring important social change with marketing campaigns that inspire and encourage millions of Canadians to move more, every day."
ParticipACTION is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to inspiring and supporting active living and sport participation for Canadians. Originally established in 1971, ParticipACTION was a pioneer in social marketing and has become internationally recognized for its compelling communications to promote physical activity.
The Government of Canada is the largest single contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. The Government of Canada, through the Sport Support Program, is providing almost $4.5 million to ParticipACTION—including $2.5 million in new funding in 2012-2013—to support its nationwide mass-media campaign, motivating communities and individual Canadians to get active, move more, and participate in sport.
