MONTRÉAL, May 5, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), the Honourable Larry Smith, Senator, today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Diving Plongeon Canada in support of the 2012 Canada Cup FINA Diving Grand Prix. The event is being held from May 3 to 6 in Montréal.
"The Government of Canada, through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, is proud to provide support to Diving Plongeon Canada for the 2012 Canada Cup FINA Diving Grand Prix," said Minister of State Gosal. "As a leading sport nation, Canada has consistently celebrated success in diving, and I wish all our athletes the best of success on the road to London 2012."
"I am pleased to welcome divers from around the world and their fans to Montreal," said Senator Smith. "This prestigious event gives our athletes an opportunity to compete against the best in the world, while providing a welcome economic boost to the local community."
Diving Plongeon Canada (DPC) is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the growth and awareness of the sport in this country. As a member of FINA, the world's governing body of aquatic sports, DPC contributes to the development of globally accepted standards of excellence in diving and supports the rules and regulations of international competition.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. The Government of Canada has provided $50,000 from Sport Canada's Hosting Program for the 2012 Canada Cup FINA Diving Grand Prix.
