BURNABY, BC, Nov. 2, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association (Wrestling Canada) for hosting the 2012 Hargobind International Wrestling Tournament. The event is taking place in Burnaby, British Columbia, with the women's competition on November 2 and the men's competition on November 3.
"Our Government is pleased to support Wrestling Canada in hosting the 2012 Hargobind International Wrestling Tournament," said Minister of State Gosal. "I want to congratulate the organizers and volunteers for continuing to showcase this prestigious event, where our athletes will represent Canada with pride and determination."
The annual Hargobind International Wrestling Tournament attracts 200 athletes from seven countries. It is hosted by Wrestling Canada, the national sport governing body for Olympic-style wrestling in Canada. The role of Wrestling Canada is to encourage and develop the widest participation and highest proficiency in Olympic wrestling in Canada.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. A contribution of $40,000 was provided to Wrestling Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. The Government of Canada also approved about $1.7 million in 2012-2013 for Wrestling Canada through the Sport Support Program. Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program also provided $626,000 to support 42 Canadian male and female wrestlers with living and training expenses in 2011-2012.
