QUÉBEC CITY, March 16, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, Minister of State (Agriculture), and Member of Parliament (Mégantic-L'Érable), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Cross Country Ski Canada in support of the 2012 Haywood Ski Nationals. The event, which is being held from March 17 to 24, will take place at both the Ski Centre at Mont Sainte-Anne and on the Plains of Abraham in downtown Québec City.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to support once again our athletes and coaches with this contribution to the 2012 Haywood Ski Nationals," said Minister of State Gosal. "I encourage all participants to pursue their skiing goals here at these national competitions."
"On behalf of the Government of Canada I welcome athletes from Canada and around the world to Quebec," said Minister Paradis. "Sporting events like this one not only showcase our region to the world, but also bring an added economic boost to our communities."
"The Haywood Ski Nationals is the premier domestic race event each year for Canadian cross-country skiers from the grassroots to World Cup level," said Davin MacIntosh, Executive Director, Cross Country Canada. "We applaud the Government of Canada for giving our young athletes the opportunity to hit the start line alongside World Cup and Olympic medallists from around the globe. It is events like Cross Country Canada's national championships that inspire a healthier and more active nation, while showcasing our sport, and country, internationally."
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to Cross Country Ski Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. Sport Canada's Sport Support Program is also providing up to $2,524,392 to Cross Country Ski Canada for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
