Harper Government Supports the 2012 International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Cup Whistler

WHISTLER, BC, Feb. 3, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to the 2012 International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Cup Whistler, which is being held at the Whistler Sliding Centre from January 30 to February 4, 2012.

"Our Government is proud to provide support to Bobsleigh Luge Skeleton Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program for the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Cup Whistler," said Minister of State Gosal. "Canada has achieved great success in sliding sports at both the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and the 2011 World Championships, and I look forward to witnessing some of our top racers further this success while competing on home soil."

"Hosting major international events on Canada's west coast is critical to the growth of our sports across the country," said Don Wilson, Chief Executive Officer, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton. "The Government of Canada has been a critical player in driving podium performances in the sports of bobsleigh and skeleton. We applaud the government for their support in helping us once again showcase our sport at its best on one of the most spectacular venues in the world."

Bobsleigh Luge Skeleton Canada (BCS) is a non-profit organization and the national governing body for the sports of bobsleigh and skeleton in Canada. Its vision is for Canada to be the leading bobsleigh and skeleton nation in the world. BCS works toward this goal by focusing on four critical areas: programs, process, people, and planning.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to Bobsleigh Luge Skeleton Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. The Government of Canada also committed $2.8 million in 2011-2012 to Bobsleigh Luge Skeleton Canada through the Sport Support Program.
