PANORAMA, BC, March 16, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), David Wilks, Member of Parliament (Kootenay-Columbia), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Alpine Canada in support of the 2012 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Cup Finals.
"Our Government is pleased to contribute to the IPC World Cup Finals, where our top alpine para-skiers will take on the best in the world," said Minister of State Gosal. "I am inspired by the commitment and dedication that our athletes demonstrate as they represent Canada and pursue their dreams on the road to Sochi 2014."
"In addition to providing an opportunity for our Canadian athletes to compete on home soil, this prestigious event allows us to showcase beautiful British Columbia to visiting international athletes," said Mr. Wilks. "Hosting this competition at this world-class venue in Panorama will have a positive impact on the local economy and our community"
Excluding test events for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, the 2012 IPC World Cup Finals in Panorama will be the first in Canada since 2007. More than 80 athletes are expected to compete in four events: Super-G, Super Combined, Giant Slalom, and Slalom. Members of the Canadian Para Alpine Ski Team, which features Paralympic, IPC World Cup, and IPC World Championship medallists, will be competing against the world's best.
Hosting international sport events gives Canada the opportunity to showcase our country to athletes and spectators from all over the world and brings significant economic benefits to Canadians and their communities.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to Alpine Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. Sport Canada's Sport Support Program is providing $4.775 million to Alpine Canada for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
