EDMONTON, Sept. 27, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), the Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State (Democratic Reform) and Member of Parliament (Edmonton-Sherwood Park), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association (Wrestling Canada) to host the 2012 Women's Wrestling World Championships. The event is being held in Edmonton from September 27 to 29, 2012.
"Our Government, through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, is proud to provide support to Wrestling Canada for the 2012 Women's Wrestling World Championships," said Minister of State Gosal. "We recently cheered on our women wrestlers at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games, and I look forward to having them compete here at home. I want to wish all our competitors much success at these World Championships."
"Hosting international sport events such as the 2012 Women's Wrestling World Championships offers an opportunity for our athletes to compete against some of the best in the world, while bringing a welcome boost to the local economy," said Minister of State Uppal. "The Government of Canada supports wrestling in Canada and is a strong and vocal advocate for the inclusion and equity of women and girls in sport."
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. Funding of $50,000 has been provided for this event through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. In 2012-2013, Wrestling Canada will receive $1,674,000 from Sport Canada's Sport Support Program, and in 2011-2012, $289,145.83 was provided through the Athlete Assistance Program to support 18 women wrestlers with living and training expenses.
