CANMORE, AB, Dec. 16, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), Blake Richards, Member of Parliament (Wild Rose), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Cross Country Canada in support of the Alberta World Cup 2012. This FIS international cross country ski event is taking place in Canmore from December 13 to 16, 2012.
"The Government of Canada continues to support our athletes and provide opportunities for them to compete here at home against elite competition," said Minister of State Gosal. "Our cross country skiers are among the best in the world, and we are proud to assist them today, and on the path to the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games."
"Once again, the international spotlight is shone on our region as the world's best skiers came together for this competition," said Mr. Richards. "Investments in hosting international sport events lead to economic benefits and business opportunities in the community. I congratulate the organizers, volunteers, and participants for making this event a continued success."
Cross Country Canada aims to provide national programs for the continuous development of cross country skiing—from introductory experience to international excellence—for participants of all ages and abilities, fostering the principles of ethical conduct and fair play.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. A contribution of $250,000 was provided to Cross Country Canada for this event through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. The Government of Canada has also committed approximately $1.6 million to Cross Country Canada for 2012-2013 through the Sport Support Program. Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program provided $479,014 in 2011-2012 to assist 44 Canadian cross country ski athletes with living and training expenses.
