EDMONTON, July 8, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), the Honourable Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament (Edmonton Centre), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Triathlon Canada in support of the Edmonton Triathlon Festival.
"Our Government is once again pleased to support this annual event that not only provides world-class competition for our elite athletes, but also promotes the benefits of a healthy lifestyle to the local community," said Minister of State Gosal. "We are committed to supporting Canada's high performance athletes and to contributing to the health and well-being of our communities."
"I am delighted to be here at this multi-level competition for participants of all skill levels," said Mr. Hawn. "Our community welcomes the economic boost, and the Festival's organizers and volunteers are proud to showcase our city to the world."
"Hosting major international events at home is critical to the growth of our sport across the country," said Alan Trivett, Executive Director, Triathlon Canada. "The Government of Canada has been the most critical player in driving podium performances, while also giving Canadian athletes the opportunity to compete in front of their families and friends. We applaud the Government for their support in helping us once again showcase our sport on a spectacular venue in Edmonton just weeks before Canada's triathletes head to London in hopes of contributing to the Canadian Olympic Team's goal of finishing in the top 12 of the overall medal count."
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. The Government of Canada has provided $50,000 from Sport Canada's Hosting Program for the Edmonton Triathlon Festival. Sport Canada's Sport Support Program provided more than $1.2 million to Triathlon Canada during the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
