COLLINGWOOD, ON, Feb. 7, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), Dr. Kellie Leitch, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and to the Minister of Labour, and Member of Parliament (Simcoe-Grey), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup at Blue Mountain.
"Our Government is proud to support our athletes and coaches with this contribution to the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup," said Minister of State Gosal. "Since its debut as an Olympic event at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy, the growth of snowboard cross in Canada is truly impressive—a testament to the value of investing in our athletes."
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to welcome athletes from Canada and other countries to the beautiful Niagara Escarpment," said Dr. Leitch. "I commend the organizers and volunteers for showcasing Collingwood to the world! Events like this bring an economic boost to the region and demonstrate the hospitality of the community."
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to the Canadian Snowboard Federation through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. The Government of Canada also committed $2,389,318 to the Canadian Snowboard Federation in 2011-2012 through the Sport Support Program.
