Her Majesty The Queen Visits EllisDon Project Site
Queen and Duke first passengers to arrive at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport as part of Royal Tour of Canada
MISSISSAUGA, ON, July 5 /CNW/ - On July 3rd, 2010, EllisDon and Winnipeg Airports Authority welcomed Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II, and The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh to the Winnipeg James Armstrong International Airport site. The arrival into Winnipeg at the airport was one of many stops on a Canadian tour which included visits to Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto and Garrison Grounds in Halifax.
The royal couple were the first passengers to arrive at the new air terminal building in Winnipeg. As part of her tour, The Queen signed a message "to the youth of Manitoba" which will be placed in a time capsule to be opened in 2060.
This tour, The Queen's sixth to Manitoba, contained several events that had been planned by the province, including her unveiling of a cornerstone at the site of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and the ceremonial planting of the Amber Jubilee ninebark, a new shrub created in her honour. The Queen had first visited Manitoba in 1951 when she was still a princess. Subsequent trips took place in 1959, 1970, 1984 and 2002.
Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger was enthusiastic about the trip, saying: "We are looking forward to celebrating our province, its people and our past, present and future with the Queen of Canada."
Darryl Fife, EllisDon's Vice President and Area Manager for Midwestern Canada, echoed the excitement: "EllisDon is very proud to be a part of this landmark project, and we are even prouder to have been able to share in this historical day."
