The most popular schools attended in 2012 by Heritage beneficiaries; includes roughly 15,000 students' input who used their Heritage RESP to attend post-secondary this year.
TORONTO, Dec. 4, 2012 /CNW/ - Heritage Education Funds is thrilled to announce the top selected universities and colleges by the 2012 beneficiaries of Heritage Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs). Heritage's overriding goal has been to strive to encourage new parents to start an RESP for their children, as well as to remind those with plans to continue to contribute and increase when possible, so that their child has the best chance possible to afford a post-secondary education. As Heritage reflects on the number of students who benefited from its RESPs in 2012 alone, the company goal comes full circle and has more significance.
This year's top selected school was the University of Toronto, with almost 12% of Heritage beneficiaries attending this year alone. Not far behind is the University of British Columbia with over 10.7%. In third place is York University with over 8.8% of students attending this institution. Fourth and fifth runners up are close in attendees this year, with University of Waterloo with 6.7%, and Simon Fraser University with 6.6%.
There have been tens of thousands of students who have applied to use their Heritage RESP in pursuit of university or college, let alone the many others who chose to withdraw their savings for additional courses, such as technical colleges.
Jasmine S. from British Columbia is thankful for her RESP this year, allowing her to concentrate on her courses rather then her expenses: "With nobody willing to hire a student with little or no experience, and without the option of working full time, Heritage is my only life line right now. Thanks to my parents registering with Heritage, I now have the sufficient funds to allow for yet another stress free school year that will allow me to concentrate on my education, without having to worry about the finances of post-secondary education."
"First year of college or university is an exciting time in any child's life" says Jason Maguire, President of Heritage Education Funds. "It is also an extremely expensive time for parents who try their best to make sure their child is starting off on the right foot. It is estimated that according to the University of Alberta, a student spends upwards of $6,000 a year in tuition, and the average student living on campus needs roughly $17,400 for tuition, living costs, transportation and other fees associated with on-campus living. Luckily, those students who have kicked off their first year of school with their Heritage RESPs are on track for a debt-free start after graduation".
Heritage's list of the 20 most popular schools spans nationally from the University of British Columbia in second place, to the University of Newfoundland in 14th. Surprisingly the first college to appear in these statistics is Seneca College in 25th place, followed by Humber in 28th place. This year's statistics show a greater number of Heritage RESP beneficiaries pursuing University over college programs.
Heritage congratulates all those who pursued a post-secondary education in 2012 and looks forward to assisting you and your families next year.
