Historic Collaboration Agreement between Canadian Malartic Mine and the Abitibiwinni, Lac Simon, Long Point, and Kitcisakik Anishinabeg First Nations

MALARTIC, QC, June 3, 2020 /CNW Telbec/ - Canadian Malartic Mine (CMM) and the Abitibiwinni, Lac Simon, Long Point, and Kitcisakik Anishinabeg First Nations are happy and proud to announce that they have reached a Collaboration Agreement aimed at the sustainable development of the four Anishinabeg First Nations and their increased participation in CMM's mining activities and projects. This Agreement is the first of its kind in Abitibi-Temiscamingue between Anishinabeg First Nations and a mining company in operation.

The Collaboration Agreement sets out measures to increase the participation of the four Anishinabeg First Nations in CMM's activities in regards to training, job and business opportunities, and environmental protection until 2027. The four communities will also receive annual financial contributions in order to promote their sustainable development and to enable the establishment of community-building projects.

The parties are committed to implementing the Agreement on a daily basis in order to achieve their stated objectives. A CMM implementation coordinator and an Anishinabeg First Nations coordinator will soon be hired. Working together, both coordinators will, among other tasks, develop strategies and implement the Agreement's various components. In fulfilling their mandate, they will be supported by various committees comprised of CMM representatives and members appointed by the Anishinabeg First Nations.  

The parties are pleased to be working together to develop a mutually beneficial, cooperative, and respectful long-term relationship based on dialogue, information sharing, honesty, and trust. This Collaboration Agreement is the culmination of more than two years of hard work that will mark a new chapter in relations between the mining industry and the Anishinabeg First Nations in Abitibi-Temiscamingue. 

Agnico Eagle Mines Limited and Yamana Gold Inc., which equally own CMM, are proud to play a role in this Agreement and consequently to help shape extensive economic and cultural exchanges with the Anishinabeg First Nations in Abitibi-Temiscamingue.
