Historic win as GoodLife Personal Trainers vote yes for a union
TORONTO, July 7, 2016 /CNW/ - Over 600 GoodLife Fitness Personal Trainers in the City of Toronto voted yes to being represented by Workers United Canada Council in a ballot count conducted yesterday at the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
This makes them the first group of fitness professionals in the industry in Canada to be unionized.
Personal Trainers have expressed concern on several issues regarding GoodLife working conditions, including: not having access to WSIB protection (compensation for workplace injury), forced to pay out of pocket fees for training and equipment, clawed-back wages, and forced to sign non-compete clauses that restricts their ability to work as trainers elsewhere.
"We are very pleased to welcome GoodLife Personal Trainers to our union," said Barry Fowlie, Director of Workers United. "Fitness professionals do important work and it's time that their contribution to the company is recognized. We look forward to bargaining a fair contract with GoodLife."
