TORONTO, May 4, 2012 /CNW/ - As an annual tradition, Holcim Canada once again rallied its employees, community partners and neighbours to celebrate Earth Week this year by undertaking activities to raise awareness about and to protect the natural environment in the communities where it operates.
Across the country, Holcim Canada's business divisions raised awareness for environmental issues close to home, focusing on solutions such as water conservation, recycling of household materials and hazardous waste, as well as collecting used clothing for local charities and participating in local park clean ups. In Quebec, the company is participating in Défi Climat, the province's largest program to raise awareness and action towards combatting climate change.
"We were delighted by the response this year from the community to partner with us and to contribute to the sustainable future of the natural environment in their own backyards," said Andrea Bourrie, Director, Planning and Regulatory Affairs at Holcim Canada. "We welcomed public officials, such as the Honourable Lisa Raitt, MP Halton, members of the public and community organizations such as Scouts Canada and the Girl Guides of Canada who joined our employees to plant over 10,000 native trees at our aggregate quarries." Over 700 members of the public, including neighbours, Holcim Canada Community Advisory Panel members, and students from local schools pitched in at tree planting events held at various Holcim Canada locations.
In 2012, Holcim Canada is also celebrating the centennial of its parent company, Holcim Ltd, and marking the occasion with the Together for Communities employee volunteer initiative. Through the initiative, employees are being encouraged to contribute one day of volunteer service to local communities. This initiative is a perfect complement to Holcim Canada's existing corporate social responsibility program, and an excellent opportunity to engage its employees, neighbours and stakeholders in a partnership to make a major contribution in the communities where Holcim Canada operates.
