TORONTO, June 26, 2015 /CNW/ - In the final Call to the Bar ceremony this month, James K. Stewart, Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, was awarded an honorary LLD from The Law Society of Upper Canada at Roy Thomson Hall.
The Law Society confers the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa in recognition of outstanding achievements in service and benefit to the legal profession, the rule of law or the cause of justice. The honorary LLD recipient serves as an inspirational keynote speaker for the new lawyers attending the Call ceremonies.
Law Society Treasurer Janet E. Minor conferred the degree to Stewart at the afternoon ceremony.
Stewart then addressed the Call candidates, members of the audience and the distinguished guests speaking about the role of the International Criminal Court in upholding human rights and the relevance this has for the lawyers being called to the Bar.
After the new lawyers had officially been called to the Bar, Treasurer Minor shared her thoughts on the key to sustaining the thrill of the first day in a new profession. "You have the capacity to make a difference," Treasurer Minor said. "You are empowered. You can help to empower others. When you do, in your work and in your life, I think you will find this kind of engagement is the most rewarding and fulfilling — and it will give you the kind of happiness you feel today."
The Law Society called 335 new lawyers to the Bar of Ontario at the afternoon ceremony — the last of the June Call ceremonies. Nearly 1,700 new lawyers were called at six Call to the Bar ceremonies held in London, Ottawa and Toronto in June.
