« Innovation and creativity are key drivers of social change and human progress. They can be powerful tools to help advance human rights and this is why we chose this year to honour people who have dared and taken risks to defend an idea, a project or a new practice in their environment », announced Philippe-André Tessier, the Commission's interim President.
The Commission is pleased to gather five distinguished members of the jury who embody this year's theme: Fabrice Vil, cofounder and president of the NGO Pour 3 Points, Annie Pullen-Sansfaçon, professor at Université de Montréal and cofounder of Gender Creative Kids Canada, Nathalie Bondil, Director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Martine Roy, one of the Commission members and Director of the National Strategy of Pride at work Canada, Philippe-André Tessier, interim President of the Commission.
The winning initiative can take different forms, it can be for instance: a book, a play, a graphic novel, a song, a software, a video game, a web documentary, a neighbour's day, a toy, a virtual reality experience, a research project, a sport or a cultural activity. Above all, it is about being creative and to propose something new that contributes to defend and promote rights and freedoms in Québec.
People and organizations are invited to submit nominations by filling a form online on the following link: www.cdpdj.qc.ca/pdl. Completed nomination forms should be sent to the Commission by Sunday July 15th, 2018 at 5 p.m.
Since 1988, the Rights and Freedoms Award is awarded each year on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day which will mark this year the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. It aims at highlighting the exceptional achievement or commitment of an organization or an individual that contributed to the protection and promotion of human rights and youth rights in Québec.
The Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse (Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission) ensures the promotion and respect of the principles set out in the Québec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. It also ensures the protection of children's interests and that their rights recognized in the Youth Protection Act are respected and promoted. In addition, the Commission ensures compliance with the Act respecting Equal Access to Employment in Public Bodies.
