MONTREAL, Sept 3, 2014 With back-to-school in full swing, the Horatio Alger Association of Canada announced today the opening of its scholarship application process for students beginning their post-secondary studies in the fall of 2015.
A total of 80 need-based scholarships (20 per province) of $5,000 each are available to high school students residing in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia. Students are encouraged to send their applications until December 1.

Horatio Alger Scholarships are awarded to deserving students in financial need who have overcome significant adversity while demonstrating strength of character, strong academics and a commitment to pursuing higher education, as well as desire to contribute to society. Funds can be used for both post-secondary vocational or university studies.
"We are proud to offer $400,000 this year in need-based scholarships to worthy students in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia," said Dominic D'Alessandro, President of the Horatio Alger Association of Canada. "Since 2012, we have helped hardworking and deserving young people attend post-secondary institutions, and we will continue to build our program nation-wide."
Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, a Member of the Horatio Alger Association since 2012 and in whose name the Quebec scholarships are awarded, echoed D'Alessandro's sentiments.
"As a Member of the Horatio Alger Association, I am very proud to enable determined young people to pursue their dreams through higher education and support them on their road to success," Mr. Mulroney said. "All Canadians benefit when our population is well educated and these scholarships are an investment in our country's future leaders."
