TORONTO, Nov. 2, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - The Horatio Alger Association of Canada, the nation's largest provider of need-based scholarships, is thrilled to announce that $4 million was raised Tuesday night at the second annual Horatio Alger Excellence Gala, all of which will go towards funding the Association's post-secondary scholarship program. Over 90 companies, foundations, and individuals donated to the event that hosted 670 guests at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.
Horatio Alger scholarships are awarded to deserving students in financial need who have overcome significant adversity while demonstrating strength of character, strong academics, a commitment to pursuing higher education as well as a desire to contribute to society. Since 2012, over $3.19 million in scholarships have been awarded to 645 deserving young Canadians. In 2019, The Association will award 200 scholarships valued between $5,000 and $10,000 to students across Canada. This is more than double the number of scholarships awarded in 2018, thanks in part to the generosity of our Excellence Gala sponsors. These are in addition to the 45 Horatio Alger scholarships valued at up to $5,000 each sponsored by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited.
This year, the Excellence Gala honoured Jay S. Hennick, the Global Chairman and CEO of Colliers International Group Inc. (TSX and NASDAQ: CIGI) and Founder and Chairman of FirstService Corporation (TSX and NASDAQ: FSV), who will receive the 2019 International Horatio Alger Award, a prize awarded to contemporary role models whose experiences exemplify that opportunities for a successful life are available to all individuals dedicated to the principles of integrity, hard work, perseverance and compassion for others. Mr. Hennick will be formally inducted into the Association in Washington, D.C., during the 72nd Annual Horatio Alger Awards, which take place April 4–6, 2019.
"The Excellence Gala was an extraordinary event, and one I will never forget," said Mr. Hennick. "This is an Association that truly knows how to make a difference. I am thankful to all the sponsors who made this event possible. Their patronage ensures that the Horatio Alger scholarship program will continue to expand in the years to come and I look forward to being involved as a Member."
"As President of the Horatio Alger Association of Canada, I want to thank everyone who attended and purchased a table for or donated to the Excellence Gala," said Mr. Prem Watsa. "I also want to thank our speakers and entertainment who made the event so memorable. Wayne Gretzky, Dan Aykroyd, Amanda Lang, David Foster, and The Tenors were all impeccable. And to Jay Hennick – welcome to the Horatio Alger family."
