Horse Carriages Operating on Borrowed Time
VICTORIA, March 23, 2016 /CNW/ - Jordan Reichert, of the Victoria Horse Alliance and representative of the Animal Alliance Environment Voters Party of Canada, says horse carriages in Victoria, B.C. have already lost the ethical battle, it is just a matter of time before they are banned.
This statement comes after the advocacy group started a petition to ban horse carriages and brought forward to the City evidence of improper foot care, irresponsible operation of the carriages, and concerns for public safety.
Reichert says that so far carriage companies have not responded to any of the claims directly. Instead, he says, they are receding back into their comfort zone of talking of life on the farm.
"This is animal exploitation," Reichert replies. "We've shown the evidence that condemns this industry on its own merit. Now the City must decide whether to continue this inhumane tradition or join other progressive cities around the world in banning it once and for all."
Victoria Horse Alliance presents to council tomorrow. "We're hopeful that after Council reviews our report and considers the alternatives we've proposed, they'll do the right thing and not renew horse carriage permits".
