Comprehensive strategy lays out 10-year roadmap to tackle housing crisis and homelessness
VANCOUVER, April 7, 2017 /CNW/ - The BC Rental Housing Coalition will release an Affordable Housing Plan for BC that proposes a series of specific, costed, and immediate measures to increase rental housing supply, close the affordability gap, and address chronic homelessness in BC. Coalition members throughout BC will advocate for this plan in the upcoming BC election.
Media are invited to a news conference on Monday, April 10 at the Housing Central office for the release of the Affordable Housing Plan.
The plan combines rental housing and homeless count data with BC's population growth estimates, assessments on the condition of BC's social housing stock, and costs of development. It concludes with recommendations on the cost to government and the community housing sector of implementing the strategy, and innovative cost-sharing mechanisms.
"As we head into a provincial election where housing affordability is the number one issue on voter's minds, we felt it was important to quantify what is will take to solve this housing crisis in B.C.," said Kishone Roy, CEO of the BC Non-Profit Housing Association and chair of the coalition. "We have taken a look at the entire housing continuum and will present an evidence-based plan to make BC affordable again."
